Smurfs navigate the real New York City

The producer of the new Smurfs movie says New York City proved to be a terrific backdrop for the little blue characters who are country folk at heart.

"The Smurfs" opens Friday and superimposes the animated Smurfs against a live backdrop of the Big Apple.

"New York City provided very interesting, colorful and physical backdrops for the little blue things," producer Jordan Kerner told the New York Daily News. "It enabled us to put them into an environment that for them might seem hostile, where there's a lot of people walking and moving."

"Going onto a subway could be a very dangerous thing for them," Kerner said.

The animated Smurfs get the full tour of New York with scenes in Times Square, the Village and the FAO Schwartz toy store.

The creatures aren't totally out of their element. They have help from a slew of sophisticated celebrity voice-over stars, including Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Tim Gunn, Jonathan Winters and George Lopez.
