Kim Kardashian Files for Divorce After 72 Days of Marriage

The only thing more exciting than celebrity weddings, of course, is celebrity divorces. And nowadays, the two seem to go hand in hand. When Kim Kardashian officially filed for divorce from her husband Kris Humphries yesterday, it's safe to say that few people were surprised by the news. Well, perhaps Kris Humphries was surprised, as it's being reported that he heard the news from the tabloids as opposed to directly from his wife. Well played, Kim!

The "reality" here, ironically, is that a made-by-television marriage is difficult to manage for most people. The constant presence of the cameras, the magazine covers, the relentless tabloid stories. That's all part of the package when you marry into the Kardashian family. And it's especially true when you're a marginal NBA player who would otherwise have remained anonymous to the vast majority of the world.

Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian have managed to put together what appears to be a functional marriage and relationship. But Odom was a legitimate NBA star in his own right, and there's no denying that Khloe was a bit of a black sheep in her family, most notably when compared with Kim and Kourtney. That placed the two on much more even footing, and Khloe doesn't generate anywhere near the type of attention that is lavished on Kim.

Kim Kardashian is probably finding herself in a difficult place from a personal and professional standpoint. She's still young enough to be considered "young" in Hollywood, but she's rapidly reaching the point where she's going to need more than her youth and sexuality to remain relevant. It's unlikely she's going to find something that works for her, outside of the possibility of getting married and transitioning her reality fame into the next stage of her life.

For that reason, it's easy to see why she may have fallen in love with the idea of getting married after only knowing Humphries for such a short time. Now it appears that Kim is headed back to being single, which will definitely be a good thing for her show. But the clock is ticking on whether she'll be able to take the next step in her "reality" career.
